If you bought a power cutter, youd probably call it a sthil saw, Im sure Stihls are very good cutters, but they may not be the best you can buy.
In my time Ive seen and repaired about every make of power cutter there is.
Power cutters are not just chain saws with discs fixed to the front, they have different requirements.
1. Low down pulling power (torque).
These engines are electronically governed not to exceed 10,000 rpm (this is so the cutting disc does not exceed a certain tip speed). The engines are ported to produced power at lower RPM than chain saws.
These machines use a 71cc engine to drive a 12" disc. Other makes use this size engine to drive 14" discs. You need more power than you think with a power cutter. This is a cutter you can really lean on.
High power, high quality light weight and slim build (ideal for accessing those narrow gaps).
2. Anti vibration systems.
Vibration white finger is an industrial disease.
Most cutters are rubber mounted (some earlier types have none) Our Husqvarna cutters are spring mounted, and are the lowest vibration machines available.
3. Cutting disc adaptability.
Most machines fit only 7/8 or 20mm centre holes. With a Husqvarna 371K youll never be stuck for a disc as they fit both.
4. Dust filtration system (this is the big one).
The business in replacement pistons and cylinders WAS !!!!! huge. Ive lost count of the number of machines Ive seen with varying degrees of dust damage (brick dust is a wonderful grinding paste). If you are meticulous about care and maintenance you should avoid dust damage, (but who is). On a building site machines tend to be used, abused and only maintained when they stop working. What you need is a machine that is almost foolproof, this is where Husqvarna 371K comes in.
Ive yet to replace a piston or cylinder through a breakdown of the filtration system.
Air is pulled in through the engines flywheel fan where a large percentage of the dust is centrifuged out through Husqvarnas air injection system. (Very much like that on a famous multi coloured vacuum cleaner). The air then has to go through a triple layered oiled foam filter, which traps the rest of the dust. (This filter is periodically cleaned). Finally there is a sealed large concertina paper filter, just in case maintenance of this foam filter isnt carried out. Even the throttle shaft of the carburetor has a sprung nylon seal fitted, as on other machines this is a place where dust can enter the engines. If you do run your machine with a partially clogged filter this will tend to richen the mixture and choke the engine. The Husqvarna air compensation system will sense this and automatically adjust the fuel mixture to keep the machine running at the optimum level of performance.
One more great feature of the Husqvarna 371K is that it is fitted with a water kit as standard. This has a Hoselock connection for any garden hose and through its own regulator tap you can control the flow of water on to the disc. Although the obvious benefit of this is that eliminates dust, the hidden benefits are that when using abrasive discs the water slows down the rate at which the abrasive bonding resin melts, and you also find you can cut harder materials than you would with a dry disc.
Drive belts run in an enclosed casing to keep it as dust free as possible.
5. Other features.
The recoil starter is a twin (balanced) pawl system, on left hand side of the machine (the natural side) with a large stacked rope pulley and an engine de-compression valve. Starting is easy and reliable.
The carburetor is vibration isolated from the engine giving it a longer service life. Also engine heat doesnt transfer to the carburetor which is the main cause of vapour locking and bad hot starting.
And now one of the best features - the price.
As these machines are not as well known (yet) as Stihls there is, for a limited period, a very special offer. Husqvarna have always made the ultimate chain saw and this same quality, design and after sales back up is now available in power cutters.
